Toys for Orphaned Children of Ukraine Project
Matt Ben-Gera, a sophomore at Scarsdale High School, and an inspirational leader of his generation, approached Rotary Club of Scarsdale, N.Y, for assistance in completing a Toy Drive he had envisioned to orphaned children in the war-torn Ukraine.
Members of Rotary International District 7230, assisted Matt in identifying and securing collection points for his Toy Drive, starting in November of 2023.
Rotary Club of Scarsdale assembled a team to help Matt with his very worthy project. He collected more than 300 lbs of toys for the Ukrainian children. Quite impressive.
With the assistance of Rotary International District 7230 International Services Chair, Amir Asadi, Rotary of Scarsdale Foundation chair, Garrett Capobianco, and Matt and his Team, safe and secure transportation of these toys was organized to be delivered to a Non-Profit organization in Ukraine known as Caritas.
With the assistance of the Rotary Club of Gizicko, Poland and its President Stefan Weker, Matt was introduced to Caritas, a Non-Profit Organization in Berezhany, Ukraine, which specifically supports Ukrainian children, ages 5 and 13, who have lost their parents in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Many people contributed to the success of this project encompassing Rotarians, business professionals and others, both financially and with their resources, time and talent. We extend our profound gratitude to: Amir Asadi, Halina Sabbath, Irena Portenko, Father Otec Mychajlo, Evelyn Jelec, Stefan Weker, Sherry and Avner Ben-Gera, Ron Fuchs, Caritas in Berezhany and Meest-America Shipping.
Most of all, gratitude to Matt Ben-Gera for his compassion, initiative, and leadership.
Matt’s great Grandfather migrated from Ukraine to the United States. Matt, in memory of his grandfather’s heritage, started this project to let Ukrainian children know they are loved and always remembered.
What an incredible success this year's Coat Drive was !
Carloads of coats, tops, hats, gloves & scarves were donated and picked up.
Jeannie, Richard, Serkan & I sorted out the donations today at Richard's house. His wife, Marianne made us delicious hot cocoa and tea as it was cold outside! Thank you Marianne!
All in all, we collected over 296 coats and winter-wear for Immigrants and the Homeless, plus over 6 huge bags of related items for Hitchcock Church's Thrift shop where proceeds go to help those in need.
Here is the incredible tally going to:
Adults @ New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) in Queens: 135 items (40 coats, 42 tops/fleeces, 43 scarves, gloves, hats, + other items)
Kids @ New Immigrant Community Empowerment : 120 items (48 coats, 15 tops, 48 scarves, boots, gloves, hats, + other items)
Homeless @ Midnight Run: 40 items ( 13 coats, 23 scarves & gloves)
Hitchcock Church Thrift Shop : Over 6 HUGE bags of lighter weight coats, off season items, other items
We'll deliver them all within the next week.
THANK YOU ALL who helped out and who donated (Jeff and Jeannie - wow!)

What a great Coat Drive we had !
Over 101 people will have warm coats this winter thanks to your efforts.
I shared the stats a while ago -- nearly 300 items collected and over 6 bags donated to the Thrift Shop for future sales to help those in need.
Today Serkan, Richard & Marianne Cantor, Jeannie & I packed up Serkan's and my car with coats and outerwear which we delivered to NICE - the New Immigrant Community Empowerment center in Jackson Heights. It took 9 of us to unload and unpack!
Natalie Chan met me there a bit later to donate another 2 coats as well.
Please enjoy the photos!
And enjoy this anecdote -- this is why, exactly why, we do this:
After everyone left, I was there talking to Wendy Prudencio, the Director, when a couple came up asking Wendy a question. I noticed that they had no gloves, so I asked Wendy if they could go upstairs to NICE's offices and choose a pair of gloves. Well, they did better than that. They were able to take winter jackets for their children and boots for the wife. She said her "toes were so cold". They are recent arrivals to the USA.
This is what Scarsdale Rotary is all about!
